Acting – Qualifications and Training

The representation of a character on stage, in a motion picture, or in a television show is known as Acting. Acting is also a formulation of a play.

It is definitely a worldwide cultural phenomenon. For years, times and places have been designated to perform these make-believe characters in front of audiences. Transforming themselves into humans, animals, etc. to entertain audiences all over the world.

The impulse to act is related to our natural development and imagination as children. Most play activities included: mimicry, disguise, imitation, fantasy and transformation.

So how do we know what is good acting and what is not? We at Child Actor LA believe that the ability to communicate dialog and to have a sense of the character in front of an audience is how an actor’s talents are judged. Voice, movement and emotions are normally how this is accomplished. There are other qualities of the actor that are not so easy to describe: depth of feeling, charm, originality, plausibility and physical characteristics that attract audiences.

Acting is a very complex art. Mastering voice projection, speaking style, pronunciation, gestures, movement on stage and many other abilities is only part of the craft. Basic skills such as remembering lines and cues; also costumes, masks and stage properties; and the portrayal of a character by using class status, gender, age, nationality and temperament. It usually takes several years to learn these skills. For example: many years of studying the style of gestures, movements and facial expressions to master Indian dance-drama.

In the theater, an actor must speak and move with every environment on the stage, otherwise the whole dramatic production will fail. The actor must be believe he or she is the character they are portraying, which demands much concentration and inspiration. Great acting consists of being able to awaken the center of the brains creativity and great expression. An actor must be stimulated to great heights so that audiences are moved and intrigued by every moment of the play.

An actor’s special creative problem is controlled emotions. Other types of artists such as, sculptors, painters, composers, or even novelists never are expected to complete a new piece of work night after night; yet the stage actor must be creative night after night in front of an audience. In other terms, an actor must portray a character night after night even though he may not feel any special inspiration or artistic impulse towards the character he is portraying. An actor must constantly inspire and replenish him or herself night after night, because theater performances are usually repeated for a series of nights and months.

Aristotle, through his Poetics (about 33 BC) became one of the first to discuss theater acting in the West. In the Greek theater, actors wore masks and very heavy garments that portrayed mythical and historical characters. Temperament and feelings were portrayed through speech and gestures that were very clear to the audiences. Speech training and vocal exercises were part of training that an actor would go through. Aristotle’s written thoughts included, the human voice could portray passion and delight and distress and anger could be felt by feeling emotions at the time the actor expressed them. Finding true feelings at the right place and time on stage was one of the problems that Aristotle did not address well. In conclusion, Aristotle stated that acting was for the gifted or insane.

Greek actors were obsessed with crossing the boundaries of artistic abilities, emotions and imitations. Poles a Greek actor, (315 BC) actually carried the ashes of his deceased son in an urn so that it would stimulate grief while playing the character Electra who was mourning the death of her brother Orestes. (Many male Actor’s during that time and hundred’s of years later played parts of women.) By doing this, the audience was moved very deeply. However, his experiment was not easily duplicated and remains a curiosity in history.

By the third century BC, the Greek theater declined. In fact, acting had almost disappeared for a thousand years in the West. During the Roman Empire (1st century BC to 5th Century AD), theater existed and flourished and also during the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century) in courts and cities. Actor’s back then were thought to be unreliable and social outcasts and were very rarely credited with the status of a true artist. It wasn’t until the 17th or 18th centuries did respect for the theater and acting change.

Scam Prevention by Child Actor LA Institute

Child Actor LA Acting Institute with exclusive placement with top Hollywood agents, who come in weekly to conduct workshops within our educational facility. Children currently working as series regular on General hospital, Modern family, Cristela, Fresh Off The Boat, Nickelodeon and top national TV commercials and print + movies. Personal growth, location in Irvine, and soon in Culver City!

If you have been wondering if your child would qualify for the film, TV industry, just know that a visit to us at Child Actor LA would allow you to find out if your child has what it takes. Our children come mostly from the word of mouth after all these years.

We also maintain a presence at local events and at times, we will spot a child whom we feel has potential and is within a good age group, at a local place. Agents years ago, and I mean top Hollywood agents, may have approached you about your child at let’s say, the Beverly Hills Mall, and brought you for an audition. Then they would give you a list of schools to visit in order for your child to get training. It has been a long time since agents don’t scout in such way, and will consider kids with training only. They hardly open up package inquiries through the mail. The agents who visit us weekly come in to conduct educational workshops themselves, and emulate the auditioning process. By coming in to train our children, they get to meet our amazing families and our children, who are Shakespearian trained and trained in modern, improve.

Be wary of schools whose entire business is based upon stopping you at local places. We may at times spot your child at a mall or the beach, actually, but some fly by night institutes or long term scams, and there are such too, may bring anyone and everyone indiscriminately, as long as the parents are willing to pay for classes, or pay for a pretense pay per play seminar with supposedly “agents” going in. We work mostly from the word of mouth, once again.

Also local schools have their kids in little plays and they advertise potential opportunities for the children’s talent, which don’t exist. It is easy to spot, as you would see kids on their company sites perhaps in costumes, or just in class at their school, but never on anything which ever aired anywhere. Their cuteness may not make up for the lack of achievements. You may read about one of their kids having obtained a role somewhere, but check out the show/commercial. Then ask the school to produce the child’s file and see if it all connects. Hmm… I’m just the Face book lady, but I’ve heard it all.

Classical training mixed with modern improv’ goes a long way towards the children’s success!

Some scam prevention advice.

Child Actor LA scam prevention advice is here for you. Found on a site on which a local stage oriented place which claims they have agents going in, advertise. Ironically, they don’t have agents’ visits apparently, and are trying to spin that. But some of what I read made sense.

“““You answer a casting notice, get approached in a mall, or even get a phone call after filling something out online. The sales person pretending to be in the industry and posing as a casting director, agent or some other title tells you your child is “perfect” and would like you to audition for some part.”””

What they are spinning:

*A casting director will not approach you at a place of gathering. They communicate with agents and the agents send your child to an audition. As you found out reading above, agents will not scout you either, and want kids who are already trained. It’s okay for someone to approach you, but they have to announce that they are a tuition based institute. NOT misrepresent themselves! *

“““Excited you go to the audition with your kid in tow. Once there you realize that there are 100’s of others there and that it is not a “real” audition. There is no part to fill, script to memorize or production company there. It is a sales meeting and you are in the audience. Someone goes up and reads a pitch to all the excited kids and parents. They tell you your kids were chosen to be a part of the showbiz industry. Sometimes, they pull you and your child into a room and make your child read a couple lines for them. They do this to make the entire experience seem more legit. The reading is meaningless because there is no real part you are reading for.”””

What they are spinning:

* A seminar/cattle call: (100 kids!). Everybody is beautiful and talented out of the 100 kids invited, 100 kids get “accepted”. They usually operate out of a seminar room, rented at a hotel. They often bring assistant agents from small agencies, who get paid to be there, and have no decision making power. They ask you to pay $7K or $8K for the chance to meet agents. Your child “performs” in front of them. They never received any training and hence, are not actors, but it’s okay because the “agents” are not real either like I just indicated. You should not have to pay to meet agents. A reading of lines which is not for the purpose of evaluating your child to become part of a legitimate institute is meaningless, because your child would never get picked up randomly to audition for a job without agent’s representation!

That is not an evaluation that is a fake audition, and the people you are dealing with may have misrepresented themselves as managers, or casting directors. They are just people who misrepresent a “pay per play” type of situation, and will announce to you a cost to move on to meeting actual Hollywood agents. Needless to say that the top 5 to top 35 agents who come to us to conduct workshops and meet already highly trained kids in such way, do not participate in the scam events described above!

NOTE: Child Actor LA scam prevention tips also include, never pay to audition. Real casting directors would never stop you and offer you a job. They work with agents. Then agents would not offer you representation, if you pay for:

“““Expensive, inferior classes, worthless acting workshops and poor quality portfolios.”””

*Simply because the law does not allow agents, nor casting directors to offer any services. They can only work on percentage basis. Do not believe anyone who approaches you to offer you jobs for your child. Legitimate schools may approach you at places of gathering where they maintain a booth space for instance, or as they are shopping for themselves, and consider your child to become part of their institute. But then your child has to go through an evaluation process. ANYBODY who offers you A JOB and not an opportunity to visit an institute is misrepresenting themselves, and certainly their title. They are not agents! Besides, acting demands skills like everything else. No one will just “hire” you or your child!*

Warmly,
Mary

Actors on Acting – Casting & Auditions

When attending an audition it is of the utmost importance to be prepared. Most decisions to eliminate you from consideration are made during the first 30 seconds of an audition. When you walk into the room it’s very important to stay in your own space. Don’t start comparing yourself to others. Women tend to do that. Don’t you do it! Concentrate on being yourself and try not to be too critical.

If this is your first audition, don’t make it known, nothing turns off a casting director more than saying that is your first audition and that you’re nervous. Just do your job and leave. Your job is done! You have tried out for a part, now it’s time to wait and see if you get a call back.

Different directors are looking for different things so learn to be flexible. Some directors expect you to come with good old fashioned missionary zeal – oozing with enthusiasm, courage and thoroughly convinced that you’re the right person for the part.

Don’t be late, that shows them a lot about your professional ability. Most directors have a major problem with that. Keep in mind that they have a limited amount of time and don’t have time to waste. Be prepared, be professional and be on time.

Never show up to an audition without talking to your agent about what is required for the part. What is the age range, what’s the gender, are there any sides or scripts available. The time and place for the audition. Dress for the character, it shows you have studied the part.

Never book an audition knowing that you will not be able to be there. Be aware of conflicts and be honest about them. Share that information up front with the casting director. Never compromise your ethic or moral values. Know in advance if there are going to be any callbacks and when the project shoots. No sense auditioning for a part when you know that you’re not going to be around when the shooting starts.

Do your networking after the audition – never before. Remember that you’re in a business that’s 95% rejection, so don’t take it personally. You may not get the part, but you may make an impression for a later project. That’s how the system works.

Audition Tips: When you show up for an audition have your head shots and business card handy. Before you sign in…ask if there are any changes to the script. Don’t sit down. Stand in a quiet place – by standing you keep your energy up and geared for the part. Take the time to look over the script one more time and note any new changes, then sign in.

Once called, they will probably ask you to state your name and the agency that represents you. A video camera will document the audition as the director cues you to begin. Keep in mind that your audition began the moment you stepped in the room. You only have one chance to make a good impression, so give it your best shot.

After you do your reading, you will be excused by the director, informed of any call back, if any, and you’re done. That’s it. Go for it!

How To Create an Acting Resume?

Are you looking for an acting job? Before you get that acting gig you dream of, you had better know how to put together a top notch acting resume.

Directors usually like to work with people who know what to do. In the same respect do not inflate your roles you add to your written resume you never know who is reading!

You can set up a generic cover letter and quickly tailor it to the needs of a production. A personal cover letter shows that the actor has at least read the part description and it also gives a hint as to how intelligent he or she is.

Building Your Acting Resume

You can divide your resume into sections that describe each area of your career, experience and training. Awards and honors that you have received are a very important part of the written resume. You should include all awards, honors, and critiques you have received. Training and education both formal and informal should be detailed along with organization involvement, industry memberships, and professional affiliations.

Be sure that you don’t lie on your resume. Don’t make things up such as special skills or write things just to fill up your acting resume. You should try to keep your acting resume within one letter-sized document. You don’t want your resume to be too lengthy.

Be sure to use an appropriate font style so that your resume is easily readable to everyone. Look at your head shot and make sure that it really shows your face. Use your best head shot that still reflects your current look.

Make sure your contact information is current and up-to-date and be sure to include your email address. You want the casting director to be able to contact you if he or she is interested in calling you back. The next thing you’ll need to work on is your verbal resume.

Mistakes to Avoid When Building Your Acting Resume, The Do and Do Not list of Acting Resumes

Do Keep it to the point. Stick to the point of your “acting” experience and credits, try not to wonder off into jobs and subjects that are not of interest to a casting director. You need to get your best work across as quickly as possible. If you bore the casting director with useless info at the beginning then he may toss it before even getting to the good stuff.

Do keep the font simple and the layout clean. Avoid fancy fonts and keep it easily readable. Your art comes through on a stage, not on paper.

Do Spell check!!!! Kinda a no brainer, but people still forget to do it. Proof your resume and allow a friend to proof it as well to catch any mistakes you may have missed.

Do keep it neat looking by using the same size paper for the head shot and resume.

Do stay focused to your acting goals.

Do add your contact info, people sometimes forget that part. If you have an agent you would use your agents phone number, your cell number, email and a link to your online portfolio, reel or website. Do not list a street address.

Do not add stuff as filler just to make it seem longer. You do not need a 2 page + resume. Try to keep it all to one page staying focused on your best work. If you were in 17 school plays last year or the countless non speaking extra parts, no body needs to hear about every tiny role you had… only the best roles.

Do Not use a chronological resume format unless it’s the most appropriate because you had long running productions and very few. Generally, a chronological resume does not arrange information well for actors. You always want to highlight your best work at the top and not make someone search for it on a page by date.

Do Not lie about experience. It’s very easy to lie about acting experience, classes taken, etc. Avoid doing so, you will get caught.

Do Not name drop. Knowing someone has no effect on your skills and will make you look like a star struck novice.

A Standard Acting Resume Model

An acting resume should contain the following:

First and last name Your contact info as well as your agents info, if you have one. If you have an agent you would use your agents name and phone number, your cell number, email and a link to your online portfolio, reel or website. Union affiliations if any. Your stats – height, weight, hair and eye color, vocal range. Also the range of ages you can play if applicable (people disagree about this one). Acting credits, a sample of your work and experience level. List some of your best and more recent work. Special talents such as dance, musical instruments, singing. Extra skills such as languages spoken, physical abilities, martial arts skills, etc. Education and Acting Classes Any awards you have received Any extracurricular activities or hobbies that may be of interest to a casting director (keep this very short) Any additional information that may be specific to certain roles.

If your child is interested in acting career you can enroll him with the Child Actor LA – Children Acting lessons for life Skills. TV Stars – Really? They Started On The Legit Stage

Many times the general public associates an actor with a role they play on a long-running television show, not realizing that often that thespian had an active career on the stage first. Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterston on Law and Order, Jason Alexander on Seinfeld, and Patricia Heaton on Everybody Loves Raymond are a few of the many actors who first trained for, cut their teeth on, and professionally performed on the legitimate stage.

The fact is the technique most often taught to American stage actors – some form of the Stanislavski Method – works very nicely on both TV and film. Although there are adjustments to be made going from the stage to television, a well-trained stage actor can usually make those adjustments fairly quickly.

The biggest changes have to do with the subtlety employed by those acting for the camera. Stage actors find that physically and vocally less is more in front of the camera. Additionally, a good film or television actor has a sound sense of how to use the camera frame to their best advantage. An actor like Michael Caine is a master at this.

For someone who has only done television or film, acting on the stage can be difficult. The stage demands that actors sustain a character for long periods of time, something the electronic media does not do. Overall, stage performing also calls for bigger actions than those needed for television and film. If someone has never been trained for the theatre, this can be intimidating.

Of course the scariest thing about acting on stage is the fact that you’re in front of a live audience and if you make a mistake, you don’t get a Mulligan. Even when a television show is done in front of a “live audience,” there’s less pressure for the actor to be perfect. If they “go up” (that is, forget their lines), they can make a joke and get a laugh while “cut” is called. They then get to try the moment, action or scene again. There is no “cut” in a live stage performance; there is only “covering” for a flubbed line, a missed entrance, or a misplaced prop.

Here are a few actors that you’ve become familiar with on television who first acted on the legitimate stage.

Jerry Orbach

Orbach, who passed away in 2004, was best known as the wisecracking Detective Lennie Briscoe on Law and Order. As a young man, he attended the University of Illinois and Northwestern University where he studied drama. After going to New York, he continued to study for the stage. He became closely associated with musicals, creating the role of El Gallo and singing the well-know opening number “Try to Remember” in the long-running musical The Fantasticks. He won the Tony in 1969 for his portrayal of Chuck Baxter in Promises, Promises; he sang the hit song “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” in that show. He also played leads in Chicago (Billy Flynn) and Forty-Second Street (Julian Marsh). Most Law and Order fans don’t realize that Orbach had a beautiful, resonate singing voice.

Bebe Neuwirth

Beatrice “Bebe” Neuwirth has recently become a regular on Law and Order, where she plays the role of Tracey Kibre. However, it was on the sitcom Cheers that she found fame by playing Lilith Sternin-Crane – a tough, tense psychiatrist and wife of Frasier Crane. Neuwirth trained at the Julliard School and first made her name as a dancer and actor in the national tour of A Chorus Line (1980), where she played Cassie and Sheila. In 1982, she appeared on Broadway in Dancin’, directed and choreographed by the legendary Bob Fosse, and in the musical Little Me. She cemented her reputation on the Great White Way by playing the lead in Bob Fosse’s revival of the musical Sweet Charity (1986), for which she won a Tony. Neuwirth is an amazing, charismatic musical performer, who commands the stage with her voice and body.

Jason Alexander

Best know as Jerry Seinfeld’s obnoxious best friend George Costanza in the sitcom Seinfeld, Alexander, who was born Jay Greenspan in Newark, NJ, is another former Tony winner. While he was an undergraduate at Boston College, Alexander was cast in Stephen Soundheim’s Broadway musical Merrily We Roll Along. He won the Best Actor in A Musical Tony for his role in Jerome Robbin’s Broadway (1989). In the first few episodes of Seinfeld, he wasn’t quite sure of how to play George Castanza so he imitated Woody Allen.

Sam Waterston

On television he plays tough, no nonsense D.A. Jack McCoy in Law and Order (1990), but originally Waterston was best known for his stage roles. He went to Yale, where he did not study acting, but did taking acting classes at the American Actors Workshop in Paris. Waterston played numerous roles in New York, including Jonathan in Oh, Dad, Poor, Dad, Mama’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feeling so Sad, Hamlet in Hamlet, and Signoir Benedick of Padua in Much Ado About Nothing, for which he won the Drama desk award for Best Actor. Prior to becoming associated with Law and Order, he was best known for his work in straight plays, both new and classic. On stage, Waterston perfected an elegant, refined style, displaying an ability to make precise and subtle acting choices.

Barry Bostwick

On the Michael J. Fox sitcom Spin City, Bostwick played the dimwitted mayor Randall M. Winston Jr. in 70 episodes. Since that time, he’s appeared on numerous hit TV shows as a guest star, including Scrubs, Cold Case and Law and Order. But Bostwick has deep Broadway roots that include the creation of the role of Danny Zuko in Grease, for which he received a Best Actor in a Musical nomination, and the creation of the lead role of Jamie Lockhart in the musical The Robber Bridegroom, for which he won the Tony. Bostwick, who also played in numerous straight plays, was known for his high energy and slapdash style. While performing in his award winning run as Jamie Lockhart, Bostwick broke his arm when he fell swinging across the stage on a rope. He proved he was a trouper though when, after a short recuperative period, he got back on stage with his arm in a cast and continued to play Lockhart, rope swing and all.

Patricia Heaton

For 70 episodes, Heaton played Debra Barone, Ray Romano’s wife on the very popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. As a young woman, she focused on theatre arts at Ohio State University and then went to New York where she studied with William Esper. She made her debut in the Broadway gospel musical Don’t Get God Started, but overall during her career in New York she was relegated to small roles. With a few acting buddies, she started a theatre company called Stage Three, which produced new works in NYC. In 1989 they took their successful production of The Johnstown Vindicator to Los Angeles, where casting directors saw and liked Heaton. Slowly her TV career started to take off. But Heaton has long acknowledged that despite the fact that she never made it big on Broadway, her stage training has been instrumental to her success on television.

James Gandolfini

Gandolfini continues his run as the cold-hearted, insecure, narcissistic Tony Soprano on HBO’s hit series The Sopranos. After receiving a degree in Communications from Rutgers University, Gandolfini went on to study acting in the late 1980’s at the prestigious Actors Studio in New York City. After making his professional stage debut in Big El’s Best Friend, he appeared in many New York productions. He made his Broadway debut in 1992 as Steve Hubbell in the revival of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, which starred Alex Baldwin and Jessica Lang. Other New York credits included On the Waterfront, One Day Wonder and Tarantulas Dancing. The same year he first appeared on Broadway, he also landed his first screen role, which was in Sidney Lumet’s A Stranger Among Us. Since 1992, he’s appeared in over 20 films. He’s been Tony Soprano in over 70 episodes.

Other actors, who have either made their name or learned invaluable acting lessons in the theatre before becoming part of the electronic entertainment industry, include Martin Sheen, Stockard Channing, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Duvall, Meryl Streep, and Swoosie Kurtz. These actors have labored hard to learn their craft on what was the first acting platform available to humankind – the live stage.

Movies are a little over 100 years old and television is about 75 years old. The formal theatre goes back over 2,500 years! It’s the true learning and testing ground for acting technique, stamina, and skill that, once honed, can then be transferred to any other venue.

Go to a Broadway show or a professional theatre near you – you may catch a performance by someone you’ll see break through on the tube in the next few years. One night, you’ll be sitting in your den or living room watching the next big hit drama or sitcom and say, “Hey, didn’t we see that actor on the stage?” Yeah, you did, before they were famous. Very cool.
